Southport has more accountants than most people expect: chartered practices on and around Hoghton Street, small firms in Birkdale and Hillside, and a growing number of sole-practitioner bookkeepers working from home with Xero or QuickBooks. Every business here is based in Southport in its own words or by the address it publishes itself. For each one the page shows what it does, who it works for, and whether the professional body it belongs to lists it on its own register, checked by us with the date.

How to choose an accountant in Southport

Know what the titles mean. Anyone can call themselves an accountant or a bookkeeper. "Chartered accountant" is used by members of the chartered institutes such as ICAEW, and "chartered certified accountant" by members of ACCA. AAT members can be licensed by AAT to run their own practice. Each body keeps a public finder, and the cards on this page say which ones list each firm, as the register states it, with the date we checked.

Every firm that offers accountancy services for money has to be supervised for anti-money-laundering, either by a professional body that does that job, such as ACCA, ICAEW or AAT, or by HMRC. A good accountant will tell you who supervises them. It is a fair question to ask, and the answer should come straight back.

Decide whether you need a bookkeeper, an accountant, or both. A bookkeeper keeps your records straight through the year: invoices, receipts, bank reconciliations, payroll and VAT returns. An accountant prepares year-end accounts and tax returns and advises on tax. Many sole traders need only a self-assessment return; a limited company needs annual accounts, a corporation tax return and a confirmation statement every year.

Ask how they charge. Some firms here publish fixed monthly fees; most quote after a first call. A fixed fee tells you the cost before the year starts. Ask what is included, what counts as extra, and how they handle the January rush.

If you are a sole trader or landlord, ask about Making Tax Digital for Income Tax. Since 6 April 2026 people with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates through compatible software, and the threshold is coming down in later years. Several firms on this page say they set people up on Xero, QuickBooks or FreeAgent for it.

Useful to know in Southport

  • The deadlines. If you need to send a tax return for the first time, you must tell HMRC by 5 October. Paper returns are due by 31 October and online returns, and the tax owed, by 31 January. Local searches for an accountant peak in January and again in April and May, so the quiet months are the time to find one. Source: GOV.UK: Self Assessment deadlines
  • The registers we check. ICAEW, ACCA and AAT each publish a finder for their members and firms; the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers has one for bookkeepers. A firm that is not on a finder may still be properly supervised, by HMRC or another body. A firm that claims a membership the finder does not return is listed here without that claim. • Money laundering supervision. Accountancy service providers that are not supervised by a professional body must register with HMRC for anti-money-laundering supervision. Firms supervised by a body such as ACCA do not register with HMRC as well. Source: GOV.UK: who needs to register for money laundering supervision
  • Making Tax Digital for Income Tax started on 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000, and the government has set out lower thresholds for the years after. Source: GOV.UK: Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

Bookkeepers and payroll

Several businesses here are bookkeepers rather than accountants: they keep the books, run payroll and file VAT returns through the year, and some prepare the year-end figures for an accountant to finish. Paychecked on Hart Street does payroll and nothing else. Dymond Bookkeeping and Fintro Accounting say bookkeeping and payroll are their main work, KG Accounting does bookkeeping, CIS and self-assessment returns, and Churchtown Accounts and Limitless Accounting combine bookkeeping with self-assessment returns for sole traders and landlords.

What it costs locally

Most firms quote after a first conversation. Two publish prices on their own sites: Simply Accounts Online lists sole traders from £25 a month, limited companies from £39 a month and a self-assessment return from £149 a year; Lifestyles Accountancy gives guide prices of £300 to £600 and £500 to £900 a year, and £11.40 a month for sole traders. Prices change; the firm's own page is the one to check.

Why some names are missing

A few accountants who are recommended in local Facebook groups are not on this page because their own websites say they are based in Burscough, Formby, Leyland, Crosby or Wigan and do not say they cover Southport. Others appear only on a professional register with a home address and no page of their own. If you run one of those businesses and work in Southport, add yourself and we will check it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an accountant cost in Southport?

Two local firms publish prices: one from £25 a month for a sole trader and £149 for a self-assessment return, another with guide prices of £300 to £900 a year depending on the work. Most quote after a free first call. Prices are on the cards where the firm prints them.

What is the difference between a chartered accountant and an accountant?

Anyone can call themselves an accountant. Chartered accountants are members of a chartered body such as ICAEW, and chartered certified accountants are members of ACCA. AAT members can be licensed to run their own practice. The cards show which register lists each firm.

Do I need an accountant or a bookkeeper?

A bookkeeper keeps your records through the year: invoices, receipts, payroll and VAT. An accountant prepares year-end accounts and tax returns and gives tax advice. Many small businesses use a bookkeeper through the year and an accountant at the end, or one firm that does both.

When is the self-assessment deadline?

Online returns and the tax you owe are due by 31 January. Paper returns are due by 31 October. If it is your first return, tell HMRC by 5 October.

Do I need to use Making Tax Digital?

Since 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates, and the threshold comes down in later years. GOV.UK has a checker, and most firms here can set you up on the software.

Can I switch accountant part way through the year?

Yes. Your new accountant asks the old one for the professional clearance and the records they need. Ask both what they charge for the handover, and avoid switching in the last weeks before 31 January if you can.

How are accountants checked on this page?

Each firm's base comes from its own website or Facebook page. Professional body membership is shown only when that body's public register lists the firm or person, with the date we checked. Anything else a firm says about itself is marked stated by the business.
