There are 16 martial arts and boxing clubs on this page for Southport, Merseyside. 0 are verified by their owners. This list is free to be on and nobody pays to move up. Every club here trains in Southport, and the card says where, the youngest age it takes, and what the club itself states about its governing body, DBS checks and first aid, because for most people looking this is a parent choosing somewhere for a child. Three of the four busiest recommendation threads in the Southport groups this month were parents. The filters are built for them: age first, then the art.

How to choose a martial arts club for your child or yourself

Start with the age and the child, not the art. A four-year-old wants a tots class built around games and listening, and three clubs here run one. A nine-year-old can do most things. A teenager who wants to spar needs a club that grades and competes. The Tots, Juniors and Teens filters do that sorting; the art is a second choice, and most children stay with whichever club they liked, whatever it teaches.

Go to the free trial and watch the class before the one your child is in. Every club on this page bar one offers a free session, a free week or a free month. Watch how the instructor handles the child who is not listening, and whether the older students help the younger ones. That tells you more than a website.

Ask three things and expect straight answers: is the club affiliated to a governing body, are the coaches DBS checked, and is there first aid in the hall. Governing bodies for the arts here are British Taekwondo, England Boxing, the English Shotokan Academy and Karate England, the British Judo Council, and the British Combat Association. Affiliation usually means a licence fee of £16 to £35 a year that includes the child's insurance, so ask about that too. Listings show what each club states; only a few say anything concrete about DBS or first aid, and the ones that do have earned the flag.

Understand the money before the first grading. Monthly fees are the visible cost; the licence fee, the suit and gloves, and grading fees of around £25 a time are the rest. Some clubs run monthly direct debits with notice periods; ask what happens if your child stops. Where a club publishes its prices they are on the card, and four here do.

For adults wanting boxing, decide whether you want fitness, amateur competition, or the unlicensed circuit. Those are three different rooms in Southport, and the page labels them. For self-defence, the krav maga classes are non-competitive by design; for a sport with a ladder, taekwondo, karate and boxing all have one.

Useful to know in Southport

  • The NSPCC's Child Protection in Sport Unit sets the safeguarding standards that governing bodies expect of affiliated clubs: a named welfare officer, DBS checks for coaches, a safeguarding policy, and a way for a child or parent to raise a concern. Ask any club whether it meets them. Only one club on this page names its child protection officer on its own site and one other states that all staff are DBS checked and first aid trained; that is not a criticism of the rest, just what is written down. Source: NSPCC Child Protection in Sport Unit
  • England Boxing is the governing body for amateur boxing and keeps a public club finder; a club registered with it follows its safeguarding and medical rules, and its boxers compete under its code. One Southport club is registered. Unlicensed boxing sits outside that code, with its own shows and its own rules; the club here that runs it says so plainly and is listed with that label. Source: England Boxing
  • British Taekwondo is the governing body for Olympic-style taekwondo and publishes its club affiliation list; the English Shotokan Academy and Karate England cover the two Southport karate clubs; the British Judo Council covers the judo club. A club's affiliation is shown on its card as the club states it. Source: British Taekwondo
  • One building on Hall Street, behind the town centre, houses three brands and one set of mats: a taekwondo club, a krav maga club and a kickboxing programme, run together under one umbrella and with the same phone number. They are listed here by art, one card each, with the shared venue on all three, so a parent searching for any of the three finds one honest entry rather than three.
  • Most of the traditional clubs train in church halls, school gyms and a leisure centre rather than their own gym: St John's in Ainsdale, Our Lady of Lourdes primary, Stanley and Greenbank high schools, the community centre on Norwood Road, The Hub in Banks. Term-time timetables change; the card links to the club's own page for this week's times.

Which art, at which age

From three: two kickboxing programmes run tots classes from three, and the biggest taekwondo academy in town starts its Dragons at three. From four: the second taekwondo club, the krav maga juniors from five, the ju jitsu school. From seven: both karate clubs (one takes seven-year-olds if a parent stays), the amateur boxing club's kids' sessions, and judo, which takes newcomers of any age. From thirteen: the adult and teen classes at most clubs, the ladies' kickboxing, and the fight gyms.

If you have no idea which art, the honest answer is the club nearest to you with a coach your child likes. Taekwondo is kicks and Olympic sport; karate is strikes, blocks and discipline; judo is throws and groundwork with no striking at all, which some parents prefer; kickboxing here is fitness-led for children; boxing is boxing.

Boxing, muay thai and MMA

The amateur boxing club on Wright Street is the England Boxing club, with kids from seven, adults, and a BOXFIT session for people who want the training without the fights. A second club on Canning Road runs unlicensed boxing for adults at a fiver a session and says so; it is labelled as such here. Two combat gyms, one on Shakespeare Street and one that appears to be moving between Virginia Street and Queens Road, teach muay thai, boxing and MMA to juniors and adults, and the town's only dedicated Brazilian jiu-jitsu programme runs inside one of them. A fight team in Ainsdale competes on the regional MMA circuit. For adults who want fitness boxing without a club, the boxing-fitness gyms are on the personal trainers page.

What it costs locally

We do not invent rate cards. In the clubs' own words, September 2026: the Shotokan club in Ainsdale charges children £20 a month for unlimited sessions and adults £6 a session, plus a £35 yearly registration that includes insurance and a grading licence; the krav maga club charges £36 a month for one class a week or £56 unlimited, plus £16 a year to the British Combat Association; the unlicensed boxing club charges adults £5 a session or £30 a month; the jiu-jitsu programme £60 or £70 a month. Everyone else quotes at the free trial. Gradings, where a club prints a fee, are about £25.

Frequently asked questions

What age can my child start martial arts in Southport?

Three, at the two kickboxing tots classes and the taekwondo Dragons. Four at the second taekwondo club and the ju jitsu school, five for krav maga juniors, seven for karate, boxing and judo. Use the Tots and Juniors filters.

How much do classes cost?

Where a club publishes prices they are on its card: from £5 a session for adult boxing and £20 a month for children's karate, to £60 to £70 a month for jiu-jitsu. Add a licence fee of £16 to £35 a year at affiliated clubs, a suit or gloves, and about £25 per grading. Most clubs quote at the free trial.

What do we need to buy?

Nothing for the trial; loose clothes and bare feet or trainers depending on the art. After that a suit for taekwondo, karate or judo, gloves and wraps for boxing and kickboxing. One club includes a free suit and belt with the first month.

How do I know a club is safe?

Ask whether it is affiliated to a governing body, whether coaches are DBS checked, whether there is a welfare officer and first aid in the hall. The NSPCC's Child Protection in Sport Unit sets the standard. Cards show what each club states; one names its child protection officer, one states all staff are DBS checked and first aid trained.

Do I need to be fit to start as an adult?

No. Every club takes beginners and most say so on their page. Krav maga and the beginners' MMA and self-defence classes are built for people who have never trained. Tell the coach it is your first time.

I want to try boxing and have never done it. Where?

The amateur club runs an adults' boxing session and a no-experience BOXFIT class; the combat gyms take beginners; the unlicensed club is adults only and labelled as such. The boxing-fitness gyms on the personal trainers page are the softest way in.

Are there classes for girls and women?

Yes: a ladies-only taekwondo class and a Saturday ladies' self-defence class at one academy, a ladies' kickboxing class at another, ladies-only boxing at one of the combat gyms, and a women's programme at a second. Use the Women only filter. Every club takes girls in its mixed classes.

How do gradings work?

Belts are awarded at gradings held by the club, usually every few months, for a fee of around £25, under its governing body's syllabus. The clubs that grade carry the Gradings held flag; the boxing clubs do not grade, they compete.
