There are 29 personal trainers and gyms on this page for Southport, Merseyside. 1 is verified by its owner. This list is free to be on and nobody pays to move up. Every independent personal trainer, gym and studio here says where it is based in its own words, and the listing shows the date that was last checked. The questions people ask in Southport's Facebook groups are the same every month: somewhere beginner-friendly and not intimidating, a women-only option, a trainer who works from a private gym, and what it actually costs. So the filters are built around exactly those, and prices are shown wherever a business publishes them.

How to choose a personal trainer or gym in Southport

Decide what you are buying first. A personal trainer is a person: one-to-one or in a small group, at their studio, in a gym, at your house or in the park. A gym is a place you pay monthly to use, with or without classes. A studio sits in between, usually coached sessions in small groups on a timetable. Most Southport independents do more than one, and the cards say which.

Ask what happens in the first session before you pay for a block. The good trainers here offer a free or cheap first session, a consultation or a trial week, and several say so on their own pages. That is where you find out whether you get on with them, which matters more than anything on a website.

Qualifications: a personal trainer should hold at least a Level 3 personal training qualification and be insured, and the ones who state it on their own page are listed with it. CIMSPA is the professional register. For anything medical, pregnancy, an injury, a heart condition, ask about the specific qualification, not the general one. Listings show what each business states; "stated by owner" means we have their word, "checked" means we have seen it.

Not intimidating is a real thing, not a slogan. Southport has several women-only gyms and studios, at least two trainers who work from a private gym at home, and a couple of places built around people over 40 or over 60. Use the Women only, Private home gym and Older adults filters. Every one of the recommendation threads this summer asked for one of those three.

Price by the session, not the month, when comparing trainers. Published Southport rates run from about £25 to £40 an hour for one-to-one, with blocks cheaper. Gym memberships from the independents start around £30 a month; the chains are cheaper on paper and busier in practice. A trainer who will not give a price until you have visited is not being cagey, but one who will not give it at all is.

Useful to know in Southport

  • The chains are here if you want them: PureGym at Meols Cop Retail Park, Snap Fitness at Central Twelve, two Everlast gyms on Tulketh Street and at Ocean Plaza, Anytime Fitness on Lord Street, and Gymophobics, a women-only franchise on Shakespeare Street. Several of the independent trainers on this page work out of those gyms. This page lists the independents; the chains have their own websites.
  • Sefton Council's own leisure centres run gyms and classes too. Dunes Splash World on the Esplanade is the Southport one, with a pool, and the council's Active Sefton programme runs GP exercise referral schemes and low-cost classes for people starting from nothing. • CIMSPA, the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity, keeps the professional register for fitness instructors and personal trainers in the UK. A Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training is the standard entry qualification; a Level 2 is a gym instructor, not a personal trainer. You can search the register by name. Source: CIMSPA
  • Virginia Street, behind the town centre, has quietly become Southport's gym street: an independent gym, a women-only studio and a men's studio run by the same trainer, a kids' and teens' programme and a combat gym all within a hundred yards. The Waterfront Promenade has three more. Weld Road in Birkdale has two studios side by side.
  • Personal training is an unregulated trade: anyone can call themselves a personal trainer. Insurance is not a legal requirement either. That is why this page shows what each business states about qualifications and insurance, and why it is worth asking to see the certificate for anything specialist.

Women-only and beginner-friendly

"Somewhere not intimidating" was the wording in two of the four recommendation threads this summer, and "women only" was in all four. Southport is unusually well served: a women-only strength studio on Virginia Street with over-40 and over-60 programmes, a ladies-only small-group studio in Churchtown, a trainer with a private ladies-only gym at home, ladies' classes in Ainsdale church halls, women-only sessions at two of the mixed studios, and a women-only franchise gym in the town centre. Use the Women only filter and the Private home gym filter, and look for the free trial line on the card.

If you have never set foot in a gym, the small-group studios are the easiest door in: coached sessions, six or eight people, a timetable, and a six-week starter programme at most of them. A first session or trial week is free at several.

Boxing, strength and CrossFit

Boxing-for-fitness has its own cluster here: a boxing and fitness gym in Birkdale with kids' and adults' classes, a boxing studio on Kingsway, and boxing sessions inside two of the general studios. A strength and conditioning gym behind Central Twelve does powerlifting, strongman and a youth programme; a CrossFit box sits at Ocean Plaza; a 24-hour strength and bodybuilding gym is on the Russell Road business park. Use the Boxing, Strength and 24-hour filters. Amateur boxing clubs, Thai boxing and MMA are a different thing and will have their own page.

What it costs locally

We do not invent rate cards. These are figures Southport businesses publish on their own pages in September 2026, named so you can check them: one-to-one sessions at £30 an hour at a Birkdale studio and at a home-based trainer, £40 an hour or £350 for ten at the Birkdale boxing gym, £75 for a kickstart session with one online-and-in-person coach; group training at £35 and kettlebell sessions at £20 at the Birkdale studio; a six-week bootcamp package at £130 on Norwood Road; ladies' classes at £7 a session in Ainsdale; gym memberships from £30 a month rolling in Ainsdale, £34.99 a month at the 24-hour gym, and £275 a year at a Waterfront gym; a day pass at £10 to £15. Aggregators quote a Southport average of about £47 an hour for a PT; that is their members' average, not a local price.

Everyone else on the page quotes on enquiry. Where a card shows a price, the business published it; where it does not, ask.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a personal trainer cost in Southport?

Published local rates are £30 to £40 an hour for one-to-one, less in blocks of ten and less again in small groups (£20 to £35 a session). Several trainers offer a free first session. Where a business publishes a price it is on its card; otherwise ask.

Do I need to join a gym to have a personal trainer?

No. Several Southport trainers have their own private studio or home gym, some come to your house or train outdoors, and the ones based in a chain gym can usually arrange a pass. The card says where each trainer works.

Which gyms in Southport are women-only?

Use the Women only filter. There is a women-only strength studio on Virginia Street, a ladies-only small-group studio in Churchtown, a trainer with a private ladies-only home gym, women-only sessions at two mixed studios, ladies' classes in Ainsdale, and Gymophobics, a women-only chain, on Shakespeare Street.

Is there a gym in Southport with a pool?

Two independents on this page have pools, one on Slaidburn Crescent and one on the Promenade, and the council's Dunes Splash World on the Esplanade has one. Use the Pool and spa filter.

What qualification should a personal trainer have?

A Level 3 Diploma in Personal Training as a minimum, insurance, and ideally CIMSPA registration. Specialist work such as pre and post-natal, older adults or injury rehab needs its own qualification. Listings show what each business states; ask to see the certificate for anything specialist.

I have never been in a gym. Where do I start?

A small-group studio with a trial week, or a women-only studio if that matters to you. Coached sessions, a timetable and a six-week starter programme are the easiest way in, and several places on this page offer a free first session or consultation.

Can I train at home or outdoors?

Yes. Use the Mobile to your home and Bootcamp outdoors filters. At least one trainer runs a Saturday bootcamp in Victoria Park for £5, and several offer online coaching between sessions.

What is the difference between a personal trainer and a class?

A trainer builds a plan for you and coaches you through it, one-to-one or in a small group. A class is a timetabled session for whoever turns up. Classes are cheaper per session; a trainer is faster if you have a specific goal or an injury. Most studios here do both.
